poll has romney ahead 50 to 48 in a buckeye state virtual tie yet there obama leads by two points in the real clear politics average of the recent ohio polls. romney went ahead with afternoon rally in iowa, but that is it for at least a day as the campaign takes a backseat to the storm. romney closing argument for final stretch is dubbed day one, job one, referring to the economy. he promises tax relief. north american energy independence. to repeal obamacare, block military cuts and balance the budget among other things. all of that is on hold. romney tonight will spend overnight in dayton, ohio, returning there without planned or scheduled campaign events tomorrow. it will likely be relief oriented but not clear it will take place in iowa. if the storm passed enough and opportunity to take part in recovery and clean-up action. possible mr. romney would head for the seacoast. at this point, all carefully choreographed final stage craft in final day of the campaign have been dashed. 200 hours less, really, before the election. exactly a week from tomorrow. the romney campaign does

campaigns shuffling their schedules, president obama, mitt romney. a key battleground state. a state you can bet each one of them wanted to get to. if you look at the new poll coming from your paper. mitt romney trailing the president in that state by four points as opposed to eight. the way it was recently. what do you think the storm has impact as far as key states like this? >> again, normally i would say not much. a race this tight, tightening some. any stop that president or mitt romney makes in a local area gets a lot of coverage. draws a lot of people. can be an organizing tool. having to cancel those stops can make an impact on however many were planning to attend. the buzz, they are here, sending competing messages, in terms of earned media as they call it. it's certainly going to make a difference for them. what is being talked about in virginia is largely the storm and not the campaign speeches. it could make a difference. no way to predict which way that cuts. for romney who wants to close that narrowing gap it could be he doesn't get the face time he needs, for obama, he gets to

the election day, president obama and mitt romney will both be hitting the final battleground states very, very hard. we've got a look at some new polling in a few of these states, "the wall street journal"/nbc/marist poll shows the president with a six-point lead over mitt romney in iowa, a three-point lead in wisconsin, and a very small two-point edge in new hampshire. i'm joined by mark preston live in washington. mark, there's been a lot of talk about the president's handling of hurricane sandy and how it might affect this race. we get a glimpse of what americans think about this handling in a new poll by abc/"washington post." 78% of voters approve of the president's response, 44% say they approve of mitt romney's reaction. neither candidate is seeking to politicize this were tragedy overtly. but it really does beg the question, how could this affect this race? >> it certainly puts the president in the position of being a commander in chief and being the leader at the time of a crisis. and in many ways, he's gotten a lot of support of one of mitt romney's top surrogates, and that's chris c

at wisconsin, this is a place where, obviously, it's key. it's a battleground state. president obama has had a small lead. and he needs to maintain that. he is trying to shore up support. you look at a poll out this morning from nbc wall street journal. it has him up three points here. that is important, but it is not really comfortable. there was a poll out yesterday from marquette university, a local poll done out of milwaukee that had him up much more than that, eight points. you talk to the obama campaign, certainly they're pointing to the marquette poll. they want this appearance that they're doing very well and just trying to hold their lead here. it seems more likely that their internal polls are somewhere in between those two polls, carol. something also interesting today when the president speaks, ahead of him charles woodson, safety for the green bay packers, will be firing up crowd. you know folks here in green bay love the packers. he is a safety. what does the safety do? the safety protects against long passes -- that's right, the hail mary. that's something that the obama campa
